Chiayi County contains many ecosystems and natural resources with diverse terrains. Tropic of Cancer passes through Chiayi. But unlike in other regions where deserts are formed, interactions of seasonal winds and terrain produce abundant precipitation for thriving of forests and other vegetations in Taiwan. Various foods and dishes, such as high mountain tea of Alishan Township, pears of Zhuqi Township, railroad lunchbox, meat bun of Minxiong, square cookies, chicken rice, and mushroom meat soup, are ready for your hungry.
The coastal environment of Chiayi County contains various wetlands with high biodiversity, such as mudflat, sand bar, marshes, forests, aqua-cultural ponds, salt fields, lagoons; that are important habitat for many precious animals and plants. From Aoqu wetland, which is the largest wetland in Taiwan, through salt fields of Budai Township, then to the scattered ponds of aquaculture and other purposes, all compose the resident areas and foraging grounds for winter migratory birds. The great amount of sandpipers, plovers, egrets, ducks, geese, and gulls aggregate into magnificent flocks. Chia-Yi coast is also an important place to watch raptor. Ospray, harrier, Eurasian kestrel, black-shouldered kite, peregrine falcon, and black kite are all commonly seen.

- Levee road around the Aogu Wetland:
- Large pond near south levee: Common birds are ducks, egrets, gulls, cormorants, Eurasian moorhen, black-winged stilts, pied avocets, harriers, black kites, peregrine falcons, black-faced spoonbills, common kingfishers, sacred ibis, and Eurasian curlew.
- West and north levee: Afternoon is a better time for bird watching. Common birds are cormorant, great egret, great heron, Eurasian moorhen, black-faced spoonbill, Eurasian curlew, common kingfisher, and shrike. It is also a great place to view foraging diving of osprey and Caspian tern.
- Surrounding areas of the Sea-viewing building: ducks, geese, harrier, osprey, Eurasian kestrel, and rare purple heron.
- Old salt fields around Provincial Highway No.17, Budai Salt Pan Wetland: ducks, geese, pied avocet, Caspian tern, black-headed gull, black-tailed gull, black-faced spoonbill, sacred ibis, sandpipers, and plovers.
- Haomeiliao Wetland and nearby aquaculture ponds: monumental flocks of gulls.
- The Dongshi Bridge: Mangrove forests are colonized by egrets and heron mostly. Records show roosting of more than 10 thousand black-headed gull.

鰲鼓濕地位於Chiayi縣東石鄉鰲鼓村西方，北臨北港溪，南面六腳鄉大排水溝，西至臺灣海峽，東以台17公路為界。面積近1500公頃左右。 鰲鼓溼地因擁有沙洲地、廢耕地、魚塭、農墾區及大範圍的木麻黃防風林，而吸引大批的候鳥、Water Birds及留鳥進駐。 |

Birds資源，根據調查達220種以上，其中屬於保育類的有東方白鸛、黑鸛、黑面琵鷺、唐白鷺、燕隼、遊隼、赤腹鷹、灰澤鵟、大鵟、魚鷹、彩鷸、小燕鷗…等。另為遷徙性猛禽穩定的度冬區域，除國際瀕危的黑面琵鷺以鰲鼓為覓食區域之一，全球僅剩2000隻左右的黑嘴鷗也有約150隻左右在鰲鼓濕地棲息度冬。 | ||

Budai salt pan wetlands, which is adjacent of Haomeiliao wetland, with boundary east to Provincial Highway 17, west to the West Coast Highway 61, north to the tidal creek south off Budai village , south to old salt pan, including sixth and seventh sections of salt pans, of the Longgong River. The vast Budai salt pan provides breeding ground for Black-winged Stilt, Kentish Plover, Least Tern, and other water birds. It is also an important wintering ground for migratory birds. The salt pan produces rich benthic organisms are food for these waterfowl in the salt pan. | ||

Ninety three species of bird in 27 families have been recorded. Among them, Oriental Stock, Black-faced Spoonbill, Harrier, Osprey, Kestrel, and Least Tern are on list for conservation. Frequent winter visitors are Green Teal, Black-winged Stilt, Common Greenshank, and other waterfowls and shorebirds. The fish larvae grow in the various habitats, i.e., estuary, salt pan, ditch, are abundant to attract gulls and terns. There are records for Little Tern and Black-caped Tern breeding in the summer and more than 5,000 Black-headed Gulls and Black-tailed Gulls foraging in the winter. | ||

一般俗稱的阿里山，係指以沼平為中心的阿里山森林遊樂區。事實上，翻開地圖來看，沒有一座山叫做阿里山，面積1400百公頃是由18座大山組成，屬玉山山脈支脈，距Chiayi市東方約75公里，台18線(Chiayi-阿里山)，台21線(水里-阿里山)公路或從Chiayi搭乘森林鐵路火車約三個半小時可到達，呈垂直分佈，沿途具備熱、暖、溫三帶氣候，山上風光明媚，氣候宜人是國際級的旅遊勝地。 阿里山國家森林遊樂區最高峰為大塔山，海拔2663公尺。阿里山山脈是以南港層之厚砂岩所造成。由於高山環境地處溫帶氣候，阿里山的氣候四季相差不大，平均氣溫為攝氏10.8度，在冬季最寒冷之日曾達零下3度，因此夏季為著名的避暑勝地。 阿里山五奇：日出、雲海、晚霞、巨木、森林鐵路。 |

沼平公園標高2274公尺，是阿里山賞櫻景點中視野最遼闊的地方。由阿里山登山小火車祝山線下了沼平車站後，一眼望穿便是這個沼平自然公園，園內最高點甚至可以遠眺阿里山山景。 沼平公園佔地廣大，園區內遍佈各類高山植物，如山櫻花、大島櫻、普賢象櫻、森氏杜鵑、多花紫藤、西洋蘋果、垂斯海棠、亮葉珍珠梅、貼梗海棠、雲南黃馨、桃葉珊瑚、繡球花、射干菖蒲、金雀兒、金針花…等，除了賞花之外，沼平公園也是個賞鳥的好地方。 |

Dingbenzai is one of the three early settlements in the Guanghua Village of Zhuqi Township. It is located at an altitude of about 1,000 to 1,300 meters in Alishan area of Chiayi County and also the origin of the Pachang River. There are lots of old trees at Dingbenzai. The oldest one is a 200 years old Autumn maple tree and another one 100 years China berry, which is the highest China berry tree in Taiwan. There are five attractions at Dingbenzai. The stars in the sky. The stars of the tree are the Formosan white-faced squirrel. The stars of the air are fireflies. The stars on the ground are fluorescent mushrooms. The stars in the water are the Deep-body Shovelnose Minnow. | ||

達邦位於阿里山山脈的尾端，海拔約九百公尺，是鄒族的故鄉。大約在三百年前，兩大舊社達邦和特富野，在曾文溪上游的長谷川溪和伊斯基安娜溪匯流處附近，形成達邦村，是鄒族最大的部落。 達邦豐富的自然生態資源，包括伊斯基安那自然生態公園及達德安生態區。達邦目前規劃出兩條步道，這兩條蒼鬱的古道都兼具了以前鄒族的獵道和戰道功能，延途滿佈著日據時代的人造針葉林。伊斯基安娜自然公園更呈現出原始的林相，到處都可以看到樹上或路邊巨大的山蘇，還有清澈的溪流及瀑布。此外，達邦也是個賞鳥的好地點。 |

特富野位於Chiayi縣阿里山鄉達邦村，是一座著名的鄒族部落，和另外一個鄒族部落達邦僅相隔一條伊斯基安溪，海拔約在800至1000公尺；特富野的農地大部分位於曾文溪兩岸河谷、東側的中坑溪上游和Others緩坡地，主要栽種桂竹筍、麻竹筍以及夏季高冷蔬菜，山產十分豐富，此外可前往特富野山莊附近的古道和河谷，特富野當地的自然生態和山林景觀。 「特富野古道」起於自忠、終於特富野，全長約為6.32公里是一條國家級的步道，約需3個小時的路程，前身為日據時代的運輸鐵道，沿途可欣賞到栗背林鴝、酒紅朱雀、金翼白眉、青背山雀、紅頭山雀和冠羽畫眉等Birds；「水山古道」總長約為15公里，前身為阿里山鐵路山水支線，可由自忠出發經水山廢棄鐵道、梯子板山到達特富野，高度落差約為1250公尺，全程約需5小時，是登山客十分喜愛的縱走路線。 |

從阿里山公路，經石桌右轉進入169縣道南端盡頭，崇山間的烏奇哈溪畔，深藏著一個鄒族部落～里佳（尼雅烏支那）「藍色部落」。里佳依傍於里佳溪(曾文溪支流烏奇哈溪流域)，海拔高度在1100至1400公尺之間。 「里佳賞楓步道」在步道的入口處就可鳥瞰里佳全村，木棧步道方奇旎風光盡收眼底，沿途可欣賞部落景觀（家家戶戶圍牆種植著山蘇花、崖薑蕨和石槲蘭等各色花草）、楓樹林及竹林，步道的最底端即可前往里佳生態親水區。 |

自忠，海拔約2280公尺，位於台18線95.5公里（原里程數83公里），相當於Chiayi縣阿里山鄉與南投縣信義鄉交界，DistanceChiayi市區有82公里，為新中橫公路的景點。 海拔2610公尺塔塔加，是新中橫公路最高點，也是Chiayi－玉山段台18線與水里－玉山段台21線公路之交界點，往Chiayi阿里山方向為台18線，往南投信義方向為台21線。 自忠至塔塔加一帶是秋季南遷候鳥的重要過境地，數量上以紅尾伯勞及茅斑蝗鶯為大宗。 |
