Yunlin is located at the northern part of the Chiayi and Tainan Plain, also at the south-central of the western Taiwan. It is surrounded with Nantou County on the east, Taiwan Straight on the west, Chiayi County on the south over the Beigang River, and Changhua County on the north over the Jhuoshuei River. The weather type is subtropical.
Yunlin County is a place of conventional agriculture. There are many temples in Yunlin County. Matter of fact, Yunlin is the number one when counting the amount of temple in Taiwan. Minutemen Temple at Beigang Township, Yimin Temple and Chaotian Temple at Beigang Township, Sanshanguowang Temple at Dapi Township, Liau Ancestral Shrine at Xiluo Township, Tzan-Wen College at Xiluo Township, and Zhuoshui Water Power Station are just few examples. Furthermore, the worship activities and festival celebrations are special attractions. The lantern festival of the Chaotian Temple at Beigang Township is the most famous and attracts tens of thousands visitors. Mr. Huang Hai-Dai, a hand-puppet master and a national treasure, contributes to broaden and publicize hand-puppet show and therefore, Yunlin County is known as the home of puppet show.
There are many attractions in Yunlin County. JANFUSUN FANCYWORD, Caoling Scenic spot, Shibi Scenic spot, Zhanghu Scenic spot, Taiping Street of Douliu City, tourist’s orchards and strawberry farms at Linnei Township, cattle market at Beigang Township, and Huwei Sugar refinery are few examples for well-known tourists’ choices. In addition, people can enjoy coffee and scene, especially evening scene, in a new attraction in Huashan Recreation Area, therefore becomes a dating haven of lovers. Yunlin County also produces many foods. Coffee and orange of Gukeng Township, clams of Taixi Township, oreochromis of Kouhu Township, Cantaloupe and Xiluo Rice of Erlun Township, garlic of Citong Township, soy sauce of Xiluo Township, and mullet caviar of Sihu Township and Kouhu Township are few examples.
The common water birds along the coast of Yunlin are green-winged teal, eastern spot-billed duck, common greenshank, egret, night heron, Eurasian moorhen, including some species on list of conservation: pheasant-tailed jacana, purple heron, osprey, Eurasian kestrel, harriers. The best time to watch water birds is in the Spring and Winter. The coastal wetlands, such as Zhuoshui River estuary, Chenglong wetland at Kouhu Township, Beigang River estuary, Xinhuwei River estuary, and Haikou Bridge at Taixi Township, from the Zhuoshui River to the Beigang River provide great habitat for water birds. For example, great cormorant, black-headed gull, Saunders’ gull, and black-winged stilt are commonly seen in Wendi wetland at Shuilin Township.
Huben Village of Linnei Township habituate great amount of a rare summer migrant, the Pitta. In addition, 30 more bird species, such as Swinhoe’s pheasant, maroon oriole, black-naped monarch, collared finchbill, plain prinia, and yellow wagtail are also commonly seen in this area.
Furthermore, northern lapwing, a uncommon winter visitor, inhabits Yuanchang Township, where is also known for peanut production. After the Farmland Treefrog (Zu-Luo Treefrog, Rhacophorus arvalis), the peanut bird, a nickname for northern lapwing from locals, becomes a species of attraction in Yunlin County from November to February.

Hukou Wetland is near Hukou Campus of the Wenguang Elementary School which is among Hukou Village of Kouhu Township, Neu-Tou-Wua Stream, and Jien-San Flood Channel. Hukou Wetland links with nearby Chenglong Wetland to form a complete wetland ecosystem for observing ecology of waterbirds. In addition of bird watching, well-designed trail system is also suitable for hiking and nature observation. A seven km bike route with numerous birding cabins for comfortable observation without disturbing wild birds. The wind-breaking forest provides roosting habitat for little egret, great heron, and night herons. Along the levee, the view of oyster fields, piles of oyster shells, and rafts is scenery of traditional fishing village. |

Chenglong Wetland use to be agricultural fields. Agricultural practice cannot be conducted due to flooding destruction of typhoons. The land transformed to marsh after 20 years. Other components are duck ponds, aquaculture ponds, channels, and old fields. Winter is the best birding season especially for large flocks of ducks and terns. The Black-headed Gull, Whiskered Tern, Northern Pintail, Northern Shoveler, Eurasian Wigeon, Common Greenshank, and Dunlin are some examples for common birds. Birding spots are easily approached. Small flocks of the Saunders’Gull, which is a rare bird of the world, also appear near Hanziliao area. Summer of Chenglong Wetland is also a good birding season. Summer residents include the Little Tern and Black-naped Tern. Other dominant species are the Little egret and Great Egret. The Yellow Bittern and Cinnamon Bittern also breed here. |

湖本村位於林內鄉的東南隅與斗六市郊的石榴班及楓樹湖里相接臨,除村落集中地為平原地形外,大部分為高約100~300公尺的丘陵地形,而這些丘陵地大多開發為果園為主,但仍有相當部分的原始林存在,此地生態環境甚佳,動植物種類繁多。 湖本村雖然是個小村落,可是卻有相當可觀的風景名勝,例如: Birds聚集地--枕頭山;連接林內鄉坪頂村的登山步道;全國最大的藏傳佛教所在地--白馬寺;可供現採水果的觀光果園 ;提供嘉南平原灌溉的斗六大圳以及尚待開發的大埔溪等。 目前全球僅剩一萬隻左右的八色鳥,每年都會有國際愛鳥人士,趕在5月份來到這裡,因為湖本村是全球最容易觀察八色鳥的地方。 |

草嶺舊稱為番坪坑,位於Yunlin縣古坑鄉的東邊山區,地處Chiayi、南投、Yunlin三縣之間,居阿里山、奮起湖、溪頭、瑞里等風景區的中樞Location,海拔自450公尺至1975公尺,群山環抱,得天獨厚的條件,加上各式的壺穴、瀑布、激流、崩塌地、堰塞湖行成又消失褶曲地形及中海拔原始闊葉森林、造林柳杉、墾殖茶園、孟宗竹林、桂竹林、苦茶樹園、梅樹林等景觀,使本區成為雲嘉地區著名遊憩區。 | ||
